Reason #4296 Religion Is Bad

I haven't written one of these randomly numbered points in a while.  But, here's a fairly valid one.

Many people volunteer time to help others.  Often that's through a church group.  But, there's plenty of secular organizations that also are very helpful in their communities.  And, often both types of groups are simply helping others and not pushing their beliefs onto those they are aiding, who might also be downtrodden and vulnerable.  That's wonderful.  It's also evidence that the religious aspect of the church group is unnecessary.  People can and do do good simply because they feel they should...and because they even enjoy it (not to put a selfish bent on the whole thing).

Now, many people who go to church do not participate in volunteer work.  In fact, hardly any really do.  I used to go to church.  My church had lots of very nice people in it.  I remember once when we went to help local tornado victims clean up what used to be their homes and barns.  We did not regularly help others on anything that could be considered a schedule or even annually.

Just think of the time we all could have put in helping others (if that's something you're into...and Christians will profess it is something they highly regard regardless of their actions) if we hadn't spent so goddamned much time every week learning nothing in Sunday service and Sunday school.  (And that's just my Methodist church...some people go to other churches multiple times a week to waste their time.)

Now, I'm not going to pretend that as an atheist (one who doesn't care to volunteer time to people I don't know) that I think my activities are wholly productive.  I play Warcraft.  It really accomplishes even less than church attendance.  At least at church you're interacting with other people in person.  So, maybe I could stop playing Warcraft and put that 6-12 hours a week into helping out in my community?  Not likely.  After all, I'm not a volunteery person.

And that's OK.  I'm not putting down people who don't volunteer.  I'm commenting on people who act righteous, thinking they're "good people" by attending church, and who waste their time with their religion while looking down their pious noses at the rest of us in judgment.

Yeah, religion is a bad, vacuous activity disguised as time well-spent.  At least we all know Warcraft is just harmless entertainment (and you're not even required to give 10% of your salary to Blizzard...unless you make only about $100 a month).

If you want to prove you're a good person, go out and volunteer.  Help someone.  When I've done it I've felt good about it.  But, don't go to church.  You're better off just sleeping in on Sunday morning.

Pat Tillman Mentions

Pat Tillman was mentioned on both NFL Pregame shows I watched today.  This was because of his sacrifice and the focus this week on veterans.

In neither instance did they mention that Pat Tillman was an atheist, but, that's OK.  Not necessary...even if I suspect that's because of the stigma associated with the non-belief of good people.  There was mention, however, of Pat's extraordinary "morality" and "values".

The best part was that there were absolutely no religious overtones associated with either segment.  They were celebrating the life and loss of a wonderful person who did his part as he saw fit based on his view of his country and humanity.  No prayers or ignorant speculation of his current ethereal whereabouts would be appropriate.  Of course, it never is.

Fox News Quote

"I don't know if you can call it a 'triumph' when it was so squeaky close." - Geraldo Rivera regarding the passage of the health care bill in the House of Representatives.  Good thing Geraldo isn't a sports guy.  Imagine what he would think of the result of a triple overtime NBA game.  "Both teams were very evenly matched.  Hardly even worth mentioning who won."  Tow the Fox News party line there, Geraldo.  You know who pays your salary.

For all you dumb GOPers out there:  A "triumph" is when the vote is not tied.  The Democrats won.  It's a triumph.  The vote spread is irrelevant.

Equality U

I was skipping through the channels and ready to skip right past Logo about as quickly as I can.  I'm all for gay rights and for LGBT persons being treated no differently than anyone else, but I'm not into watching gay people kiss or prance or whatever else they do.

But, the show that was on caught my attention in the guide.  "Equality U" clearly seemed to be about college...and it was.  It was about college-aged kids on a bus ride to various Christian colleges.  Why they would want to waste their time going into these pits of ignorance and be subjected to the hate of the slime who run these ridiculous places was perplexing and so I watched.

The reason for the bus ride was that these were not just gay kids, they were Christians.  Oh, brother.  One of the most confusing things I face in my readings and studies is gay people who buy into the whole Christian spectrum of insanity.

I used to joke that gay people were mentally defective.  I was called out for that once by a gay friend of mine and I realized how hurtful that could be.  He wasn't hurt so much as cautiously enraged; he knew the Kindred16 personality.  But, some other gay person might mistake me for someone who really believes such garbage.  I mean, I don't have a problem calling gays "fags" or any number of other colorful terms, many of which I learned from gays themselves.  I don't mind hearing or telling gay jokes.  After all, many gay people are incredibly funny just by how they express their gayness.

But...to insinuate that there's actually something wrong with being a homosexual is a line I no longer care to cross even in jest...not after I see how gays are treated by Christians who truly believe that being gay is voluntary and perverse and any many other flat out LIES.

So, why would the gay kids waste their time traveling to places they're not wanted?  Well, apparently, many gay youths commit suicide.  It's a problem and a concern of the gay community.  I remember when I was in college I heard that a student from another nearby school had hung himself and that he was gay.  At that time I was roommates with a gay friend who had lots of other friends and seemed very happy with himself.  And I saw no reason he shouldn't be happy.  After all, he had a great roommate who didn't kick his fag ass out when I found out he was gay (after we were already roommates, which he of course hid from me to be roommates, knowing I was straight).  At the time, I mentally shrugged off the suicide as possibly being for other reasons young people kill themselves.

Now I know that there may be other circumstances that contribute to someone killing themselves, but the immense pressure some people have laid on them to not be gay can be overwhelming.  Christians put this pressure on their gay sons and daughters and fellow congregants.  They believe that homosexuality is a sickness that can be cured.  These people are not just ignorant, they are scum.  They don't care what the science says about homosexuality; they only care what they think God thinks about it.

And they're willing to go to any lengths to lie about it, as well...just to be safe.

Gay people...run away from Christians!  Run away!  The atheists will gladly take you in.  We'll fry up a baby in your honor.

How Long?

Let's see.  Carrie Prejean, super-Christian, pageant dunce, barely able to complete a sentence, has been the darling of the Christian Right since standing up for "opposite marriage".  Nevermind that she's superficial enough to get a tit-job.

But...

How long will they praise her now that she's got a sex tape?  Will they stand by her and claim the devil made her do it?  Or will they actively seek the next Jesus-freak fraud and discard her like the trash she is?

(Oh, and she's not trash for the boobs or the tape...it's for the white-trash, "I'm a Christian and better than all you abominable homos" attitude.)

Go on Carrie, live up to your full potential.  Get into porn.
